Rams Football Pulls Away In Road Shutout of North Haven

On Friday, Cheshire High School football (2-0) pushed off a slow start and scored four times in the final three quarters to win 28-0 at North Haven (0-2). Throughout the first half, the rivals had drives stalled by penalties and stingy defense, but CHS finally snapped the stalemate with 1:40 left in the second quarter.

Sprinting down the sideline, senior EJ Quint hauled in his first touchdown catch (58 yards) from sophomore quarterback Matt Jeffery and the Rams took a 7-0 lead into halftime.

Quint’s touchdown ignited the Rams offense that put up three touchdowns in the second half. First, senior quad-captain Christian Russo scored on a 63-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

On the next drive, junior Jack Watson caught a screen pass and ran 52 yards inside the North Haven 10-yard line. At the 3-yard line, Russo took a hand-off, sprinted outside, and dove inside the pylon just six seconds into the fourth quarter.

Soon after, the Rams took the ball back on a fumble recovery by sophomore Adam Vernon. CHS found the end zone one last time when junior quarterback Mike Simeone rolled out and found senior Danny Zawalich, who broke tackles on the way to a 46-yard touchdown catch.

Simeone and Zawalich earned their first touchdowns on the play.

North Haven sophomore Adam Pandolfi made an interception in the fourth quarter, but Vernon responded with his first interception and then the Rams knelt down to clinch the shutout.

To start the game, North Haven junior Jeffrey Karavas made an interception on Cheshire’s opening drive, but the Rams defense forced a punt.

Sparked by a 44-yard run by Russo, the Rams earned a first down in the red zone in the first quarter, but North Haven forced them to turn the ball over on downs at the 7-yard line.

Cheshire appeared to force a turnover on an interception by Quint, but the play was negated by off-setting penalties.

CHS was whistled for five penalties in the opening half, but in forcing their rival to punt seven times overall, the Rams overcame their miscues and broke open the game in the second half.
