On Thursday, Cheshire High School outdoor track and field athletes shined in the State Open at Willowbrook Park in New Britain.
In a record-setting performance, senior tri-captain Ryan Farrell came from behind on the second lap to win his first outdoor State Open title in the 800-meters (1:50.58). In the process, he broke Henry Wynne's meet record (1:50.63) from 2013 and also eclipsed his Cheshire mark.
Farrell also combined with senior EJ Gonzalez, freshman Tyler Caron, and sophomore Colin Brown to place 11th in the 4x400-meter relay (3:29.94).
Brown sprinted to sixth in the 100-meters (10.95). In winning the prelims, he set a new CHS record (10.86) for electronic time.
For field events, senior tri-captain Jotham Casey earned eighth in javelin (157 feet, six inches) and classmate Chisom Okoro finished 19th in the shot put (41’11.50").
Cheshire boys compiled 14 points to take 16th place.
On the girls’ side, Cheshire placed 16th for two relays. Senior tri-captain Kristen Daddi, freshmen Alexa Ciccone and Mia Vientos, and junior Meghan Georgescu kicked off the track meet in the 4x800-meter event (10:11.56). Junior Riley Hanover, sophomore Cate Palma, Vientos, and junior Kira Zawalich teamed up in the 4x400-meter event (4:10.96).
Individually, Hanover took 23rd in the 100-meters (13.26).
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the New England Interscholastic Championship has been canceled for the second consecutive year, however, Farrell has registered to compete in National Scholastic Athletics Foundation Outdoor Nationals to be held June 30 to July 3 at the University of Oregon.
