Cheshire Girls' Basketball Rallies To Victory At North Haven

On Thursday, Cheshire High School girls’ basketball (5-4) came from behind to win 53-48 at North Haven (3-7). Starting the game with a full-court press defense, the Nighthawks created turnovers early and built a 13-9 advantage in the first quarter.

NH extended their lead to 25-17 at halftime, but the Rams regrouped and outscored the Nighthawks 14-4 in the third quarter to take the lead.

To end the third, CHS went on a 10-2 run. Senior co-captain Tess Givens hit two baskets and freshman Eva Catalanotto and sophomore Ella Kulas also scored in the spurt.

Junior Olivia Johnson opened the fourth with a three-pointer to put NH up 32-31, however Cheshire reeled off five points. Senior co-captain Grace Lurz scored a basket during the run. Kulas knocked down two foul shots and junior Mimi Perlini made one.

The Nighthawks came right back with an 5-0 surge to tie the score at 36-36, but Givens scored in traffic and drew a foul with 5:51 remaining. The basket put the Rams ahead to stay.

The Rams struggled at the foul line, but made free throws at the end to seal the road win. When NH was given a technical foul for questioning fouls in the fourth quarter, junior co-captain Taylor Fitzgerald made one of two foul shots.

After posting nine points in the fourth, Lurz finished with a game-high 16. Kulas earned a career-best 10 points and finished six for eight on the foul line.
