On Saturday, Cheshire High School ice hockey (4-2) fell 2-0 to undefeated host Wethersfield/Middletown/Rocky Hill/Plainville Co-Op (7-0) at Newington Arena. WMRP came out aggressive, outshooting Cheshire 16-4 in the first period, but senior goalkeeper/co-captain Nick Maringola kept the Eagles scoreless in the frame.

Just 39 seconds into the second period, WMRP went up 1-0 on a power-play goal by senior Trevor Piecewicz. Juniors Aaron Cholewa and Chase Millen earned assists.

Cheshire picked up two more penalties soon after, but killed off a 5-on-3 power play against them.

With the power-play advantage in the third period, Cheshire appeared to have tied the game with 6:47 remaining, but a goal was taken off for the WMRP net being knocked off.

CHS was penalized for tripping with 2:20 remaining. To make a final push, Cheshire pulled Maringola out of the net with a minute left, but senior Jack Healy netted a power-play goal to put WMRP up 2-0 with 28 seconds left.

In making 48 saves for the second game in a row, Maringola tied his career-high total. WMRP led 50-14 in shots and senior Patrick Creel picked up the win in net.

Next Wednesday, the Rams visit Northford Ice Pavilion to face defending Division II state champion Branford (5-1) at 4 p.m.
