CHS Girls' Basketball Falls To Rival On Tuesday, Boys' Swim And Dive Earns Big Sweep

On Tuesday in Madison, Cheshire High School girls’ basketball (2-6) came up short in a 61-26 loss at Daniel Hand (6-1). CHS had momentum early, taking a 4-1 lead on baskets by juniors Jenna Stickney and Tess Givens.

The Tigers responded with an 8-0 run to take the lead for good. Eight points from Givens helped Cheshire to stay within striking distance in the first half, but when she left the game with an injury, the Tigers used their depth to reel off 19 straight points and build a 39-14 lead in the third quarter. During that stretch, Hand held a 27-14 lead at halftime.

In the third, junior Jenna Stickney scored to end Cheshire’s scoring drought. She finished with six points.

Senior co-captains Kaylee Clark, Hailey Beling, Jordan DeMatteo, junior Emily Grayson, sophomore Anna Hurlbut, and freshman Ella Kulas all had two points for the Rams. Hurlbut netted her first basket in the fourth quarter.

Beling and Grayson both went two-for-two on free throws.

For Hand, junior Sophia Coppola (16), senior Hadley Houghton (11), and junior Brooke Salutari (10) tallied double-digit points.

On Friday, CHS visits Wallingford to play unbeaten Sheehan (8-0) at 7 p.m. It will be a homecoming for first-year Cheshire Head Coach Angelica Ariola, who previously assisted on the Titans staff.

Boys’ Swim and Dive (5-1)

In a virtual tri-meet at the Cheshire Community Pool, the Rams earned a sweep of Fairfield Prep (96-90) and Amity (94-80). Since 2003, the meet represents only the second time that CHS has beaten Fairfield in a dual meet.

Individually, senior tri-captains Justin Finkel (200-yard individual medley, 2:04.65) and Noah Duncan (one-meter dive, 225.53) were overall winners in the tri-meet. Finkel combined with junior Wes Johnson, senior Martin Adlianitski, and junior Anmol Sapru to capture the opening 200-yard medley relay (1:45.18).

Senior tri-captain Harrison Hua, sophomore Silas Wang, junior Dionis Demollari, and sophomore Alex Fang teamed to win the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:36.92).

Against Amity, Hua (200-yard freestyle, 1:53.39), Finkel (100-yard butterfly, 53.50), Fang (100-yard freestyle, 53.74), and Johnson (500-yard freestyle, 5:13.97) added individual victories.

For the meet with Fairfield Prep, Martin Adlianitski won the 100-yard backstroke (59.31) and his sophomore brother Kristian was victorious in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.43).

For a virtual meet on Friday, Cheshire faces Daniel Hand at 3 p.m. On Feb. 16, CHS won 92-86 over the Tigers.
