Graduation Still Set For Sunday, But With Additional Alterations

Graduation Still Set For Sunday, But With Additional Alterations

Members of Cheshire High School's class of 2020 will be able to gather — in small groups, wearing masks and exercising social distancing — on the high school football field Sunday for graduation, principal Mary Gadd told families in a letter Thursday.

Gadd announced three separate ceremonies. The first will be held at 11 a.m., followed by similar events at 1 and 3 p.m.

School officials are allowing two family members per graduate to attend. Graduates received passes in the mail, Gadd said, adding the school will only be able to hold the graduation in this fashion if participants and attendees adhere to guidelines, including wearing masks. The event will also be live streamed.

Gadd said the plan had been modified from the previously announced drive-through graduation. At the time the previous plans were made, the high school did not yet have power and “internet connection was intermittent,” Gadd added.

“We were told, at that time, that it was likely we would not have electricity by Sunday. Therefore, we made the very difficult decision to go with an option none of us wanted, and hold a drive through graduation,” Gadd wrote. “I share your frustration, but all I can say now is 'what a difference a day makes.' ...We are committed to give our students the best experience we can given this truly incomprehensible constellation of circumstances....Thank you, and let’s hope that the 'third time's the charm!”

Graduation ceremonies planned for Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday were postponed because of weather and damage done by the tropical storm.
