Construction Underway On Starbucks Off South Main

Construction is well underway on a Starbucks coffee shop along South Main Street

“Starbucks is always looking for great locations to better meet the needs of our customers, and we are happy to confirm that we will be opening a new location in Cheshire, CT this fall,” a company spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

The 2,000 square foot coffee shop at 944 S. Main St. will feature a drive-through and walk-up window. Construction began a few months ago after the project was approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission on Feb. 8. Starbucks replaces the Dragon Buffet restaurant.

Economic Development Specialist Jerry Sitko said the site is a visible spot along a high traffic corridor. Chase Bank had previously been interested in branch there but opted to build further up Route 10 across from Stop & Shop. Dragon Buffet occupied the site for around 19 years until it closed in June 2017.

Starbucks has been interested in opening in town for years, Sitko said, having looked at numerous other locations. He doesn’t believe the international chain will detract from existing locally owned coffee shops.

“We have some good local coffee shops here; my feeling is they’ll continue to do well despite Starbucks,” Sitko said. “They’ve got a local following, nonetheless there are people who like Starbucks coffee ... my hope is that Cheshire residents will continue to” support local coffee shops.

Cheshire Chamber of Commerce President Yetta Augur said residents have shown loyalty to local businesses during the pandemic, adding that she feels Starbucks will strengthen the local economy.

“I'm very happy that the new businesses want to come into town and that’s wonderful and it's nice to have a nice variety and it’ll also bring some new job openings to town as well,” she said.
