On Sunday, at Cubeta Stadium in Stamford, Cheshire American Legion Senior baseball (28-10) posted a 2-0 shutout of defending state champ Branford (32-3) in the Super Regional Tournament. It was the team's fourth straight victory.
Cheshire took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Dan Schock reached on a fielding error and went on a second on a pick-off throw that sailed wide of first base. Wes Robertson followed with an RBI single.
In the ninth, Pat Downey (infield single, run scored), Ryan Pierpont (double), and Jon Koski (bunt single, RBI) contributed to Cheshire scoring another run.
Downey had two hits. Mike Purcell and Matt Hickey also singled.
Pitchers Liam Davey (three hits, four walks) and Kyle Waldron (win; four hits, hit by pitch, walk) helped strand 13 Branford runners, leaving the bases loaded in the first and fourth innings, respectively. They each posted two strikeouts in the shutout.
In a defensive highlight, left fielder Ryan Pierpont made an over-the-shoulder catch in the fourth inning.
Branford and host Stamford (30-5-1) meet in an elimination game on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. The winner plays Cheshire at 6:30 p.m. With a win, Cheshire would clinch the program's first Southern Division Regional title.
