After forfeiting a game they led 8-2 in the eighth inning yesterday, Cheshire American Legion Senior baseball (26-10) beat Trumbull 10-4 and 12-2 at Cheshire High School to win the Southern Division Sectional finals 2-1.
Cheshire climbed from a 4-0 hole to take the first game. Jon Koski contributed a grand slam, two-run double, and a walk to garner seven RBIs. Cheshire received two hits and runs scored and an RBI from Wes Robertson and Pat Downey. Mike Purcell added an RBI single and two runs scored. Ryan Pierpont (single) joined Jay Schaff with two walks. Dan Schock (run scored) and Joey Anderson (hit by pitch) also supplied hits.
Pitcher Christian Colp (two hits, strikeout) worked four innings in relief of Parker Barnell (five innings, seven hits, strikeout, hit by pitch, walk) and collected the victory.
Cheshire took a 5-0 advantage in game two and never surrendered the lead. Schock went three-for-three, all singles. He scored three runs, drew a walk, and posted an RBI.
Robertson chipped in two hits, three RBIs, two runs scored, and a walk. Downey came up with two hits and RBIs and a run scored. Koski collected two hits, scored a run, and garnered an RBI. Kyle Hodgdon reached on an infield single and also picked up a run scored.
Koski threw a complete game with four strikeouts. He gave up six hits and two walks. Cheshire compiled four double plays (season-high).
The team has advanced to the regional round at Cubeta Stadium in Stamford. On Saturday, they face host Stamford at 3:30 p.m.
