CHS Softball And Boys' V-Ball Drop Class Quarterfinals, Girls' Tennis To Play In State Open

On Friday, Cheshire High School softball (eighth seed, 17-7) lost 2-1 in a Class LL quarterfinal at defending champion Southington (top, 22-0). The Blue Knights scored first in the second inning, but Cheshire tied the game 1-1 during the fourth. Junior Casey Harding reached on a leadoff walk and came home on a throwing error.
Southington snapped the tie in the fifth. On a two-out single from senior Rachel Dube, junior Kaitlin Peterson (single) scored the winning run.
CHS received hits from senior Bryanna McIntosh (triple), junior Sara Como (double), and sophomore Megan Hodgdon (single). Harding, freshman Sam Simione, and junior Olivia Odermatt walked against Southington junior Kendra Freidt (12 strikeouts).
Junior pitcher MacKenzie Juodaitis (12-6; eight hits, two hits, strikeout) worked six innings for CHS.
At the end of Kristine Drust's first season as head coach, Cheshire will lose Alexa DiLeo (captain), McIntosh (captain), Anisa Chaudhry, Courtney Goggin, and Alyssa Hajjar to graduation.
Boys' Volleyball (fourth, 18-4)
Despite battling back from a 2-0 deficit, CHS lost 3-2 to Glastonbury (fifth, 14-6) in a Class L quarterfinal Game scores: 23-25, 17-25, 25-20, 25-20, 15-17. Glastonbury lost both regular season meetings, but picked up this win to end Cheshire's three -match streak.
Senior Ted Li posted 21 kills (career-high), five blocks, two digs and aces. Classmate Trent Hager set career-highs for assists (48) and aces (four). Hager also had a block.
Senior Colin Haensel had 11 kills and seven blocks. Classmate Pat Lindner added seven ills and eight blocks.
CHS graduates Anthony Carbone (captain), Eric Cusano (captain), Lindner (captain), Haensel, Hager, Li, and Greg Zane are graduating seniors.
Saturday's varsity schedule:
Girls' Tennis
CHS visits West Hartford for the Opening Round of the State Open, starting at 1 p.m. Singles will be held at Conard and doubles will be played Hall.
In singles, senior captain Nadja Pejovic faces Trumbull senior Corrie MacLean.
For doubles, senior twin sisters/captains Christy and Katie Freitag meet freshman Urja Desani and junior Yomari Mercano from Rocky Hill. The doubles squad of senior Ashley Tartaglia and junior Sidney Tomko plays Bristol Eastern seniors Samantha Bevivino and Abigail Geda.
