CHS Softball, Girls' LAX, Boys' V-Ball Advance At States, Baseball Falls In Extra Innings

On Tuesday, Cheshire High School softball (eighth seed, 17-6) came back to beat Fairfield Ludlowe (ninth, 16-6) 3-1 in the Class LL Second Round. A home run from Fairfield senior Brenna Martini put them up 1-0 in the first inning. Junior pitcher MacKenzie Juodaitis (11 strikeouts, walk) didn't give up another hit.
An RBI single from junior Casey Harding scored senior Courtney Goggin (single) in the third inning. Senior Bryanna McIntosh produced a two-run single in the fourth, bringing in juniors Sara Como (two singles) and Maggie O'Reilly. In the win, senior Alexa DiLeo also singled.
CHS visits defending champion Southington (top, 21-0) in Thursday's quarterfinal at 4 p.m. After a bye in the first round, Southington shut out Newtown (17th, 13-8) 13-0).
Girls' Lacrosse (seventh, 14-5)
Cheshire held off Staples (10th, 10-7) 7-6 for their third straight victory in the Class L First Round. On the strength of a 3-0 run, Cheshire led 5-2 at halftime. Staples answered with three straight goals to tie the score. Senior Maddy Levy (three goals, two assists) and sophomore Meghan Dutchyshyn (two goals) put in goals for a 7-5 lead.
Cheshire received two goals and assists from senior Emma Farrel. Junior goalkeeper Alexa Carbone had seven saves.

CHS travels to Simsbury (second, 14-1) for Thursday's quarterfinal at 5 p.m. Simsbury defeated Fairfield Ludlowe (20th, 7-8-1) 20-14. Simsbury beat Cheshire 13-9 on May 2.
Cheshire's nine seniors enter the rematch a win shy of tying the 2013 class for career wins (69).
Boys' Volleyball (fourth, 18-3)
The Rams posted a 3-0 sweep (25-14, 25-13, 25-15) of Simsbury (13th, 8-13) in the Class L First Round. Senior Colin Haensel had 16 kills and five blocks to spark the team's third straight win. Classmates Ted Li (eight kills, five blocks, four assists, three aces), Trent Hager (29 assists, four blocks) and Greg Zane (six kills, five blocks) also contributed.
Baseball (ninth, 15-8)
In 14 innings at Riverfront Park, Cheshire came up short 6-5 against host Glastonbury (eighth, 16-6) in the Class LL Second Round.
Ethan Lonardelli (captain), Wes Robertson (captain), Dan Schock (captain), Matt Hickey, and Kyle Waldron are graduating seniors.
Girls' Golf (8-12)
In Tuesday's regular season finale, Cheshire (238) defeated Canton (239) and fell short against host Mercy (219) at Lyman Orchards Golf Club in Middlefield. Freshman Sophia Qiu joined sophomores Savannah DeBauche and Olivia Hally with a 59. Junior Dana Zappone fired a 61 and senior Morgan Dent posted a 64.
The Southern Connecticut Girls' Golf League Tournament is Thursday at Hawk's Landing Country Club in Southington.
Outdoor Track and Field
The Class LL Championship at Danbury had to be suspended. It will be completed on Thursday, starting 3 p.m. at Darien.
CHS has earned top performances, so far. On the boys' side, senior Chibueze Njoku captured the shot put (52 feet, 7.25 inches) and junior Cullen Clairmont followed him in fifth (46'7"). Senior Liam Nicoll placed 10th in the 400-meters (51.64).
Senior Selina Sampieri has led the girls' team, taking runner-up in pole vault (10'6") and adding a bronze medal for the 100-meter hurdles (16.25).
The 4x100-meter relay team (sophomore Janine Zumerchik, senior Kristin Cabrera, freshman Sarah Clark, sophomore Janaia Skibitcky; fourth, 50.49) took fourth. Senior Patricia Larson recorded eighth for shot put (33'0.25").
