Cheshire resident Lizzy Cretella and St. Paul Catholic of Bristol girls' basketball (top seed, 22-5) fell short in Saturday's Class S title game that saw double overtime at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville. Cretella, a sophomore transfer, scored 14 points in a 61-57 loss to Thomaston (third).
Boys' Swimming (28th, 55 points)
Cheshire High School sophomore swimmer Karl Bishop contributed to three best times in the State Open at Yale University's Robert J.H. Kiphuth Exhibition Pool. Bishop eclipsed his 500-yard freestyle record (sixth, 4:39.68) and lowered his time in the 200-yard freestyle (11th, 1:45.24). His 400-yard freestyle relay team (Shadeck, seniors Pat Morley and Alex Bauer; 22nd, 3:22.63) also swam their best time of the season.
Cheshire opened the meet in the 200-yard medley relay (freshman Ryan Mostoller, sophomore Mike Goodrich, Shadeck, sophomore Matt Pinciaro; 19th, 1:42.85). Greenwich finished first (652). Fairfield Prep was second (455.5).
Two-time captains Brian Johnson, Jonathan Jin Qian, and Morley, along with Bauer and Drew Young, are graduating seniors for Cheshire.
