Cheshire Ice Hockey Advances To D-II Quarters, Boys' Basketball Beaten By Buzzer Beater

On Tuesday, Cheshire High School ice hockey (eighth seed, 11-10-1) defeated Suffield/Granby/Windsor Locks Co-Op (ninth, 14-6-1) 5-2 in the Division II First Round at Wesleyan University. With the score tied 1-1, Cheshire ran off three straight goals. Senior Alex Bausch and junior Matt Jordan added goals to end the second period. Senior Luke Vendetto scored for a 4-1 lead in the third.
Seniors Joey D'Errico and Matt Vallillo both had a goal and an assist. Classmates Chris Stevens and Greg Zovas tallied two assists. Senior Jon Hauser and freshman Matt Federico recorded assists.
Cheshire finished with a 34-27 edge in shots. Senior goalkeeper Joey Solla made 25 saves.
Cheshire meets East Catholic (top, 15-5-1) in Friday's quarterfinal at Trinity's College Koeppel Community Sports Center in Hartford. Start time is 6:30 p.m. East Catholic beat Wilton (16th, 5-13-3) 9-3 at Cromwell's Champions Skating Center.
On Dec. 21, CHS lost 4-3 to East Catholic in overtime.
Boys' Basketball (18th, 13-9)
The Rams suffered a heart-breaking 38-37 in the Class LL First Round at Norwich Free Academy (15th, 19-6). With two seconds left, NFA senior Ramel Williams posted a short layup to win the game.
CHS came back from a 20-15 deficit at halftime, but came up short. Junior Andrew Yamin led Cheshire with 23 points. Marcus Outlow had 15 for NFA.
Collin Jordan (captain), Tyler Post (captain), Tom Arisco, Mark Dietrich, Reid Duglenski, Pedro Pena, Jon Rizzo, and Adam Nizich (manager) are CHS graduating seniors.
Sophomore Sal DeLucia competes in Wednesday's Class LL meet at Hamden. Start time is 5:30 p.m.
