CHS Pool Sharks Finish Second In SCC, Skiers Race At CISL State Open

On Wednesday, Cheshire High School boys swam to second place (850 points) in the Southern Connecticut Conference final at Southern Connecticut State University. CHS last took runner-up from 2005-07.
Sophomore Karl Bishop earned second in the 500-yard freestyle (4:52.05) and fourth for the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.67). Bishop was part of the 200- (sophomores Matt Pinciaro and Mike Goodrich and Alex Cheruk; third, 1:33.55) and 400-yard (senior Alex Bauer, senior Pat Morley, sophomore Kyle Shadeck; sixth, 3:28.97) freestyle relay squads.
The 200-yard medley relay team of freshman Ryan Mostoller, Goodrich, Shadeck, and Cheruk posted second (1:44.17). Shadeck was sixth through the 200-yard individual medley (2:06.31) and seventh in the 100-yard butterfly (55.59). Goodrich (100-yard breaststroke, 1:03.28) and Mostoller (100-yard backstroke, 58.76) finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Cheshire also received ninth places from Cheruk (50-yard freestyle, 23.16), and Bauer (100-yard butterfly, 56.73).
For the 10th straight season, Fairfield Prep (1,365) claimed the championship. Jesuits senior Bjorn Davis was Most Outstanding Performer.
Skiing (Boys, eighth, 308.36; Girls, ninth, 318.57)
Cheshire ended the year in the Connecticut Interscholastic Ski League State Open at Mount Southington. Freshmen Jared Chase (13th, 48.82) and Anders Norback (26th, 50.25), junior Joe Urbano (36th, 50.73), sophomore Aiden Murphy (58th, 52.68), freshman Peter Brown (59th, 52.69), and Alec Pierce (64th, 53.19) scored for the boys. Ryan Bogrette, a co-captain with Urbano, is the only graduating senior from the boys' squad.
Junior Liz Cunningham (10th, 49.28), sophomore Meghan Diamond (21st, 50.65), freshman Katie Tomko (32nd, 51.9), juniors Meaghan Carroll (64th, 54.97) and Taylor Stauffer (66th, 55.44), and sophomore Kelly Byrd (70th, 56.33) comprised the girls' varsity team.
Fairfield was the girls' champion (303.11) and Greenwich boys also came in first (298.63).

Ice Hockey (fourth seed, 10-9-1)
On Thursday, Cheshire meets Branford (top, 15-4-1) in the SCC-Southwestern Conference Division II semifinal at West Haven. Start time is 8 p.m.
Branford won 5-3 in the first meeting on Jan. 25.
