On Saturday, Cheshire High School senior wrestlers Jake Cervero (138 pounds) and Gabe Vega (170) wrapped up the State Open at Hillhouse's Floyd Little Athletic Center. Vega (3-3), who defeated Farmington senior Dovydas Simanskis 9-2 in the quarterfinals, ended in sixth place. It was his first State Open appearance.
In going 3-2, Cervero earned a pin against Bristol Eastern sophomore Zach Thompson. Cervero qualified for the meet three times and concluded his career with 123 wins.

Indoor Track and Field
In Roxbury, Mass, boys' senior tri-captain Liam Nicoll (12th, 36.19) and sophomore Janaia Skibitcky (long jump, ninth, 16 feet and 10.5 inches) during the New England Interscholastic Championship at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center. Nicoll hadn't competed regionally before.
On March 14, Nicoll competes in the New Balance National Championship at the New York City Armory.
Ice Hockey (fourth seed, 9-9-1)
The Rams will meet Branford (top, 15-3-1) in Thursday's second Southern Connecticut Conference-Southwestern Conference Division II semifinal at West Haven. Start time is 8 p.m. Branford won the first meeting 5-3 on Jan. 25.
North Haven (second, 12-5-3) and Amity (third, 11-7) play in the first semifinal on Thursday at 6 p.m.
The victors return for Saturday's final at 2 p.m.
