On Saturday, Cheshire High School indoor track and field brought home medals from the Class LL Championship at Hillhouse's Floyd Little Athletic Center. Senior Liam Nicoll (300-meters, 36.02) and junior Mark Fusco (600-meters, 1:26.42) both ran best times to finish runner-up, leading the boys' team to fifth place (26 points). Nicoll eclipsed the CHS record (36.22) set by 2005 graduate Kyle Mushaweh in 2003 and secured a bid to the Emerging Elite section of the New Balance National Championship.
Senior Chibueze Njoku claimed third in the shot put (48 feet, two inches) and seventh in high jump (five, six). Senior Trey Phillips added fourth in the 600-meters (1:27.63). Junior Russell Adam was ninth in the 1,600-meters (4:42.13), while senior David Holtman recorded 10th in pole vault (10, six).
CHS girls took 11th place (18). Senior Selina Sampieri (pole vault, 10 feet) and the 4x200-meter relay team (sophomore Janaia Skibitcky, seniors Kristin Cabrera and Kimmi Grove, junior Alexandra Pelletier; 1:48.94) nabbed bronze medals. Senior Patricia Larson recorded a personal-record in shot put (fourth; 33, 11). Junior Jamiya Richardson posted seventh in the 55-meters (7.63). Pelletier (600-meters, 1:46.25) and Cabrera (long jump; 15, three) each produced 10th places.
Staples was the girls' champion (63) and Danbury boys (64) were also victorious.
Athletes return to New Haven for next Saturday's State Open at 12 p.m.
Boys' Ice Hockey (7-6-1)
At Wesleyan University, Cheshire defeated Daniel Hand (7-7) 2-0 to take the series. Senior Joey D'Errico and junior Kyle Frederick scored in the first and second periods, respectively. Junior Matt Jordan, along with seniors Luke Vendetto and Greg Zovas, earned assists.
Senior goalkeeper Joey Solla had 24 saves in his second shutout. Hand senior Chase Briggs stopped 25 shots in net.
On Monday, the Rams face Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe (4-7) on Monday at Northford Ice Pavilion. Start time is 4:45 p.m.
Girls' Ice Hockey (8-8)
Amity/North Haven/Cheshire secured their second 4-2 win over Hall/Conard Co-Op this season. Freshman goalkeeper Hannah Cremo made 28 saves.
Amity freshman Meaghan Francis converted two goals. Her classmates, Bailey MacNamara and Jenna Casman, also tallied goals. The team received assists from senior tri-captain Abbie Lange and junior Alexa Carbone.
The girls travel to Bridgeport's Wonderland of Ice next Saturday to play host Lauralton Hall at 8:15 p.m.
Cheshire lost to host Glastonbury (39-38) and Simsbury to end a seven-meet win streak. They still defeated Guilford 49-30. Senior Lucas Swan had two pins and a forfeit at 132 pounds. Classmate Karl Jacobs (145) also earned two pins and won 5-1. Senior Jake Cervero (138; pin, 13-5) and sophomore Darren Barile (120; two pins) added two wins. Cheshire also received victories from senior Gabe Vega (170; 9-0), sophomores Owen Brown (113; forfeit) and Mike Marotta (152; 13-5), freshmen Sean Black (106; pin) and Artem Samiannin (182; pin).
CHS hosts East Haven in Wednesday's dual-meet finale at 6 p.m.
