Cheshire Skaters Post Big Wins, Wrestlers Sweep At St. Bernard, Cheerleaders Earn Third In SCC

On Saturday, at Danbury Ice Arena, Cheshire High School ice hockey (6-6-1) beat host Brookfield/Bethel/Danbury Co-Op (2-12) 12-2. Senior Cody Borowski earned his first hat trick, while classmate Antim Constantinescu recorded his first goal and three assists! Senior Alex Bausch also posted three assists (career-high). Cheshire received two goals from seniors Chris Stevens and Joey D'Errico. Senior Luke Vendetto (two assists), along with juniors Matt Jordan (two assists), Tommy Sokoloff (assist), and Frank Ilnicki (assist), recorded goals. Sophomores Griffin Cunningham (two assists), Chris Horowitz (assist), and Nick Virgulto (assist) set up goals for the first time. Junior Kyle Frederick (two assists), senior assistant captain Dan Purslow, senior Greg Zovas (assist), and freshman Matt Federico (assist) added points. Sophomore Jake Verneris (personal-best 12 saves) made his first start. Freshman Tom Bishop posted two saves.
Cheshire had a 59-16 advantage in shots.
The Rams face South Windsor (3-6-2) on Wednesday at the Northford Ice Pavilion. Start time is 6 p.m.
Girls' Ice Hockey (7-6)
Amity/North Haven/Cheshire Co-Op used six straight goals to beat Daniel Hand (1-12) 6-1 from The Rinks at Shelton. Junior Alexa Carbone had two power-play goals. Amity freshman Meaghan Francis also scored twice and joined Carbone with an assist. Amity's Caitlin Early and Peri Sosensky added goals. North Haven freshman Catherine Babbidge assisted twice. Senior Emma Farrel and sophomore Rachel Kozak also chipped in assists. Freshman goalkeeper Hannah Cremo made 21 saves.
Hand senior Morgan Connors added a shorthanded goal. Junior Hannah Donohue had 23 saves in goal.
The girls look for a fourth straight win when hosting New Canaan on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
Wrestling (8-11)
CHS went 5-0 in the St. Bernard Duels, extending their win streak to six. Cheshire collected wins against East Windsor (62-21), Ellis Tech (49-28), Rockville (63-16), St. Bernard (54-30), and St. Paul (70-9).
At 138 pounds, senior Jake Cervero won his five matches by pin. Cheshire received four pins and a forfeit from senior Lucas Swan (132) and sophomore Mike Marotta (152). Senior Gabe Vega (170) supplied two pins and three forfeits, while classmate Dan Lisath (220/heavyweight) had three pins and two forfeits.
Senior Karl Jacobs won four (three pins, forfeit) matches at 145. Freshman Artem Samiannin (182) joined sophomores Matt Robidoux (160) and Owen Brown (113) with three victories.
On Wednesday, the Rams visit Fairfield University to meet host Fairfield Prep at 5 p.m.
Cheerleading (third, 167.2 points)
Cheshire competed in the Ninth Southern Connecticut Conference Championship at Shelton. Senior tri-captain Jess D'Andrea, junior Lovely Jannetty, and sophomore Brianna Mariano were awarded All-SCC.
