On Saturday, Cheshire High School boys' basketball (3-1, 1-0) defeated Lyman Hall (1-5, 0-1) 70-43 in the Housatonic Division opener. The Rams took a 34-18 advantage into halftime. Senior Tyler Post supplied 12 points and nine rebounds. CHS used depth offensively with senior Jon Rizzo, Collin Jordan and Reid Duglenski scored nine, seven, and six points. Senior Pedro Pena and junior Andrew Yamin tallied eight points. It was a personal-best total for Pena.
In his first game of the season, senior Tom Arisco had five points and three rebounds. Sophomore Heath Post (five points) and senior Mark Dietrich (two points) recorded five rebounds. Sophomore Dylan D'Addio added four points. Juniors Matt Covel and Brody Griffin netted two points.
CHS hosts Sheehan (2-3) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Boys' Ice Hockey (2-4)
Cheshire defeated host Daniel Hand (3-3) 2-1. Senior Cody Borowski had the game-winner, his second of the year, with 11:13 remaining. Freshman Matt Federico and junior Frank Illnicki collected assists. It was the first varsity point and assist for Federico. In the first period, junior Kyle Frederick scored from senior Chris Stevens and junior Tommy Sokoloff. Senior Joey Solla had 23 saves. Cheshire won the shot battle 37-24.
The Rams host Watertown-Pomperaug (0-4) on Wednesday at Wesleyan University. Start time is 6 p.m.
Girls' Ice Hockey (4-1)
Five straight goals powered Amity/North Haven/Cheshire to a 5-2 lead en route to a 5-3 win at West Haven. Senior Abbie Lange tallied two goals. The team received a goal and an assist from sophomore Emily Gotowala and Meaghan Francis. Perri Sosensky chipped in a goal. Jenna Casman recorded an assist. The team earned a 37-24 edge in shots, with freshman Hannah Cremo finishing with 23 saves.
Cheshire faces Guilford in Tuesday's home opener at Rinks at Shelton. Start time is 7:45 p.m. Guilford is the only team to defeat the girls 6-1 on Dec. 27 in East Haven
At the Fairfield Warde Invitational, senior Gabe Vega earned runner-up at 170 pounds. Classmate Lucas Swan won twice at 132, but had retired due to medical reasons. Freshman Sean Black (106) and sophomore Owen Brown (113) collected a victory each.
Wrestling independently, Lyman Hall senior Clayton Ahearn claimed the crown at 195.
Girls' Basketball (6-2, 1-1)
The Lady Rams lost 51-42 at Lyman Hall (6-1, 1-0). The Trojans led 30-21 at intermission. Senior Missy Bailey scored 17 points, giving her 905 overall. Junior Jill Howard had 10 points. Junior Sara Como added six points and senior Bryanna McIntosh posted five. Junior Kya O'Donnell and sophomore Ciara Haensel netted two points.
Cheshire visits Sheehan (4-3, 0-1) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
