On Monday, Cheshire High School ice hockey (1-2) received consecutive third-period goals from seniors Cody Borowski, Luke Vendetto, and Joe D'Errico to beat Guilford (0-2) 7-4 in the Edward L. Bennett Christmas Tournament at West Haven. Borowski hadn't scored on the varsity level before.
Junior Matt Jordan also deposited his first two goals, as Cheshire led 2-0 in the first period for the third game in a row. Senior Chris Stevens (career-high three assists) and junior Frank Ilnicki also scored. Senior Dan Purslow had two assists. Jordan, senior Matt Vallillo, and juniors Kyle Frederick and Anthony Vitale picked up assists.
Senior Joey Solla (24 saves) won the first time in goal.
The Rams advance to Friday's tournament final at West Haven.
Boys' Swim and Dive (2-0)
At Walter J. Gawrych Community Pool, senior Alex Bauer won the 200- (1:57.06) and 100-yard (54.16) freestyles to lead Cheshire past host North Haven (0-2) 91-78. Senior Pat Morley (500-yard freestyle, 5:35.44) and Alex Bauer (100-yard freestyle, 54.16), sophomores Karl Bishop (200-yard individual medley, 2:11.9) and Kyle Shadeck (50-yard freestyle, 24.93) and Sal DeLucia (diving, 146.4), and freshman Ryan Mostoller (100-yard butterfly, 58.46) claimed individual wins.
Sophomores Matt Pinciaro and Michael Goodrich joined Mostoller and Shadeck for a first place finish in the 200-yard medley relay (1:49.6).
On Jan. 7, Cheshire meets Daniel Hand and host Xavier at Wesleyan University. Start time is 7 p.m.
In a 65-6 loss at Xavier, seniors Lucas Swan (132 pounds) and Jake Cervero (145) earned minor decisions. Swan won 6-2 and Cervero was victorious 3-2.
The Rams return next year to host Branford on Jan. 2 at 7 p.m.
