Cheshire High School girls' volleyball (top seed, 25-0) defeated Housatonic Division rival Amity (eighth, 17-6) for the third time 3-0 (25-9, 25-17, 25-19) in a Class LL quarterfinal. Senior Becca Ligi recorded 10 kills and two blocks. Senior Eva Whelan (three blocks and digs) and junior Jill Howard (four blocks) had nine kills. Junior Maria Buzzelli supplied eight digs and four aces. Senior Laura Heynen (seven kills, three assists) and junior Sarah Rodgers (26 assists) added three digs and two aces.
The quarterfinal was the last home match for Eryn Dorsey (captain), Ligi (captain), Phoebe Carmichael, Kathleen Hastie, Heynen, Whelan, and Melanie Clarke (manager). Cheshire advances to their fourth straight semifinal, facing Fairfield Ludlowe (fifth, 18-2) on Thursday at Trumbull. Start time is 7 p.m. Fairfield beat host/defending L Champion Darien (fourth, 18-3) 3-2 (25-18, 25-22, 17-25, 21-25, 15-11) for the first time.
The Lady Rams outlasted Fairfield 3-2 (25-18, 23-25, 25-20, 16-25, 15-13) in last year's semifinal at Foran.

Cheshire participated in Class L trials at Cornerstone Aquatics Center in West Hartford. Junior Lindsay Smalec finished second in the 100-yard butterfly (58.79) and fourth through the 200-yard individual medley (2:12.01). Senior Laura Mongillo added a top five prelim in the 100-yard backstroke (third, 59.98).
Wesleyan University hosts Tuesday's final at 7 p.m.
At Derryfield Park in Manchester, N.H., junior Russell Adams ended his season with 85th place (16:39.1) in the 79th New England Interscholastic Championship.
