Cheshire Girls' Volleyball Records Three-Peat, Howard Named MOP

On Friday, Cheshire High School girls' volleyball (top seed, 23-0) swept Mercy (second, 18-3) 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-21) for the third time in the Southern Connecticut Conference final at North Haven. It is their third straight title and 10th overall (SCC record). Junior Jill Howard (nine kills, eight blocks) was Most Outstanding Performer. Senior Eva Whelan (seven kills, two digs and aces), along with juniors Maria Buzzelli (nine digs) and Jillian Haberli (nine kills), were also stat leaders.
Cheshire has the top Class LL seed. After a bye in the first round, Head Coach Sue Bavone will go for her 400th win next Thursday. The winner of Monday's match between Norwich Free Academy (17th, 11-7) and host Fairfield Warde (16th, 12-7) at 7 p.m. advances to visit CHS.
