Cheshire High School cross country visited Hammonasset Beach State Park for the Southern Connecticut Conference Championship. The varsity boys took third with 89 points, while the Lady Rams finished fifth (145).
The boys secured three accolades. junior Russell Adam (seventh, 16:34) and senior Lucas Marcouiller (ninth, 16:34) both finished as All-SCC First Team. Senior Trey Phillips (14th, 16:54) was All-SCC Second Team.
Juniors Phil Caldwell was 29th (17:22), followed by classmate Ryan Shalagan (30th), senior Ben Kaplan (31st), and junior Mark Fusco (32nd) in 17:23. Jim Bennett, who is stepping down at season's end, coached his final SCC meet.
Fairfield Prep won first place (56). Jesuits senior Christian Alvarado also won the race (15:16; SCC record).
Junior Natalie Wickenheisser (15th, 20:19) claimed All-SCC Second Team for Cheshire girls. Freshman Camille Lewis (29th, 21:00) and junior Liz Cunningham (32nd, 21:03) followed her. Seniors Kimmi Grove (34th, 21:04), Erin Strahley (35th, 21:04), and Kelley Jefferis (42nd, 21:26) came in next. Sophomore Esha Bhandari recorded 69th (23:02).
Mercy senior Kaleigh Roberts was the girls' winner (18:36.4). Her team also added the team title (85).
On Oct. 26, Cheshire competes in the Class LL Championship at Wickham Park. Boys race at 3:10 p.m. and girls follow a half hour later.
Varsity schedule for Friday:
Girls' Volleyball (16-0, Housatonic Division Champion at 7-0)
Cheshire travels to Amity (14-2, 5-2) for the division finale at 5:15 p.m. CHS won 3-1 on Sept. 30.
Girls' Soccer (10-3, 6-1)
The Rams carry a six-game win streak into Shelton (4-6-3, 4-2-1) at 7 p.m, ending their division slate. With a win or tie, Cheshire would defend their Housatonic title. Cheshire came back to win the first meeting 2-1 on Oct. 2.
Cheshire hosts Hamden (3-2) at 7 p.m.
