Cheshire Boys' X-C Sweeps Dual-Meet Opener, Field Hockey Ends SCC Win Streak

Cheshire High School boys' cross country earned a sweep of their dual-meet opener at Cheshire Park. CHS beat Xavier (24-33) for the first time in years, as well as earning victories over Hamden (17-42) and Lyman Hall (15-50). Junior Mark Fusco won the race in 16:48.23. The following runners took fourth through sixth: seniors Trey Phillips (17:06) and Lucas Marcouiller (17:15), junior Russell Adam (17:18). Junior Ryan Shalagan (10th, 17:53) and sophomore Jordan Kolpak (11th, 17:56) followed them.
Cheshire girls defeated Hamden (23-36) and Lyman Hall (19-44). They lost 26-29 against Mercy. Junior Natalie Wickenheisser took third (20:30.41). Cheshire nabbed eighth to 11th places from Junior Liz Cunningham (21:11.32), seniors Kimmi Grove (21:28.28) and Erin Strahley (21:35.32), and freshman Camille Lewis (21:53).

The Lady Rams run in Saturday's Bethel Invite at 9 a.m.
Field Hockey (2-1)
Cheshire lost 4-1 against Daniel Hand (3-0) to snap their 32-game win streak in the Southern Connecticut Conference. Senior Danielle Bellantonio scored to tie the game 1-1 at halftime. Classmates Emma Farrel and Olivia Larson had assists.
Senior goalkeeper Maddy Levy had a career-high 15 saves.
Hand senior Brenna Hobin added three goals. Junior Hannah Leckey also chipped in a goal. Junior goalkeeper Melanie Rennie made seven saves.
CHS visits Farmington (3-0) on Thursday at 4 p.m.
Girls' Soccer (2-1)
Cheshire lost their first game 3-2 to Sacred Heart Academy (2-0-1). The game was knotted 1-1 at halftime.
The game was tied 2-2 until SHA junior Mary Verneris scored her second goal with 16 minutes remaining. Senior Ali Lamberti and junior Hannah Bonitz tallied goals for CHS, while junior Alexandra Pelletier chipped two assists. Freshman goalkeeper Zoe Riccio recorded eight saves. The Lady Rams visit Sheehan (1-0-1) for Friday's Housatonic Division opener at 3:45 p.m. CHS is the defending division champion.
Boys' Soccer (0-2-1)
At Oakwood Soccer Club, Cheshire and host Xavier (1-0-2) finished in a 0-0 tie. CHS hosts Amity in Saturday's Housatonic opener at 6 p.m.
Girls' Volleyball (3-0)
Cheshire faces North Haven (1-2) in Wednesday's home opener at 6:30 p.m.
