CHS Cross Country Begins Season, Football Set For Sunday's Opener

In Willimantic, Cheshire High School cross country started the year in the 35th Haddad-Windham Invite. Cheshire boys took second in Varsity 1, amassing 79 points. Juniors Russell Adam (seventh, 16:45) and Mark Fusco (10th, 16:49), seniors Trey Phillips (17th, 17:02), Lucas Marcouiller (20th, 17:11), Ben Kaplan (32nd, 17:24), juniors Steve Caldwell (38th, 17:31), and Ryan Shalagan (46th, 17:44) comprised the varsity team. Simsbury was first (63).
In Varsity 2, CHS girls secured fourth (91). Junior Natalie Wickenheisser was fifth in a time of 20:16. Classmate Liz Cunningham (15th, 20:56) and senior Erin Strahley (17th, 20:58) were separated by two places. Senior Kimmi Grove (24th, 21:38), junior Kendra Brown (35th, 23:03), sophomore Esha Bandhari (36th, 23:06), and senior Taylor Bond (37th, 23:09) rounded out the team.
E.O. Smith (29) led the way.
Both teams race Hamden and Lyman Hall in Tuesday's home opener at Cheshire Park. Boys also race Xavier and girls meet Mercy. Start time is 4 p.m.
In a postponed game, Cheshire kicks off on Sunday at Ridgefield. Start time is 2 p.m. The first meeting is part of a two-year partnership between the Southern Connecticut Conference and Fairfield Interscholastic Athletic Conference.
