Cheshire American Legion baseball (30-5) ended their best season against Branford on Tuesday at Cubeta Stadium in Stamford. Cheshire scored twice in the first (2-0), fourth (4-0), and sixth innings (6-2), but Branford used a five-run rally in the seventh to earn a 7-6 win and clinch the Southern Division title.
Branford's Tyler Forgione cleared the bases with a double in the seventh, tying the game 6-6. Christopher Stankiewicz followed up with an another double for the winning RBI.
Mike Purcell had three hits, an RBI, and scored a run. Dan Schock added a triple in the first inning and chipped in an RBI ground out in the sixth. Jay Schaff (walk, two runs scored) and Ryan Manning singled twice. Dave Villecco had an single, RBI, and scored a run. Kevin Mirando also scored after a single in the sixth.
Liam Davey gave up six hits and three walks in five innings, striking out four. Parker Barnell (four hits, two walks, strikeout) took the loss. Schock (hit, two walks) relieved Barnell in the seventh.
For the first time, Cheshire achieved 30 wins and won more than two games in the state tournament.
