Cheshire Track And Field Secures Three Gold Medals At SCC, Baseball Drops Regular Season Finale

Cheshire High School girls' outdoor track and field secured fourth place (70.5 points) in the Southern Connecticut Conference Championship at Sheehan. Junior Selina Sampieri tied her personal record (10 feet, six inches) in pole vault and in the process shattered the SCC mark of 10 feet. Sampieri also placed fourth in triple jump (33 feet, 8.75 inches).
Sophomore Alexandra Pelletier captured the 400-meters in 59.15 seconds. Classmate Jamiya Richardson, junior Kristin Cabrera, and freshman Janaia Skibitcky teamed with her to take fourth (50.64) in the 4x100-meter relay. Pelletier ended her day by running the 4x400-meter relay (junior Theresa Cashore, senior Saparja Nag, Grove; seventh, 4:18.78).
Senior Brittney Gunneson earned the silver medal in javelin (100 feet, four inches). Classmate Ariel Greene nabbed fourth in discus (97, two). Skibitcky secured top 10 distances in the long (fifth; 16, 7.5) and triple (seventh; 32, four) jumps. In high jump, sophomore Alex Liberti (five feet) and junior Katie Cavallaro (four, eight) both scored. Sophomore Natalie Wickenheisser claimed seventh in the 3,200-meters (12:20.75).
Led by junior gold medalist Chibueze Njoku (discus; 144 feet, five inches), Cheshire boys placed 10th (30.5). Senior Nick Jakowenko came in fourth (119, two). Senior Kevin Dietrich led his team in triple (fifth; 40, seven) and long (19, 10) jumps. Senior Joe Nowak tied for sixth in high jump (five, six). Junior Trey Phillips took the same place in the 800-meters (2:03.33).
The Class LL Championship is May 30 at Willowbrook Park in New Britain.
Baseball (8-12; 3-5 in Housatonic Division)
In the regular season finale, CHS fell 3-2 at Guilford (11-8). Cheshire's fourth straight loss was their second to Guilford this month. Guilford senior Ben Monte had the game-winning single in the seventh inning.
Junior Ethan Lonardelli allowed just one run in the first six innings. He struck out nine, giving up four hits and a walk. PJ Watson entered in the seventh, surrendering two hits and walks. He took the loss.
Guilford pitchers, juniors Nick Rubino and Ford Linelli, combined on a no-hitter. Junior Dan Schock hit into a fielder's choice in the fifth inning, scoring junior Paul Bronke (walk). Freshman Tommy Savino scored the second run. Savino ran for junior Matt Hickey in the seventh, reached third base on an error, and then scored on a wild pitch to even the game at 2-2.
Cheshire awaits seeding for the Class LL Tournament, starting May 28.
