The Meriden Arts Council will present it's annual Arts Award to Cheshire resident and Gallery 53 Director Rita Sarris. The presentation and reception will be at Gallery 53, 53 Colony St., Meriden on Tuesday, May 7 at 6:30 p.m. The award is presented to an individual in recognition of their contributions to the Meriden community and to the arts. Rita Sarris has been director of Gallery 53 since February 2006. As director, she oversees both the business and artistic administration of Gallery 53. Rita is responsible for scheduling art classes, workshops, and demonstrations. She coordinates exhibits, supervises volunteers, and arranges monthly art shows.
Previously, Rita was owner and office manager for Sarris Real Estate in Cheshire where she oversaw every aspect of the business. She studied business law, economics, and accounting at Quinnipiac University. As director of Gallery 53, Sarris combines both her business skills and her love of art. Rita has studied oil painting with Bruce Raven and pastels with David Cain and Mally Desomma. She is currently a member of the Arts and Crafts Association of Meriden, Cheshire Art League, and the Watertown Art League, where she has served as treasurer since 2004. Her art has been exhibited in shows at Goldsmiths in Cheshire, Waterbury Hospital, Cheshire Academy, The Orchards, in Watertown, and at Gallery 53.
