In Monday's Class LL First Round, Cheshire High School boys' basketball (26th seed; 11-11) won 59-58 at Simsbury. Senior Tim Covel (five points) scored an offensive rebound for the winning basket with 19.3 seconds left. Simsbury had a one-and-one opportunity at the foul line, but missed their only free throw (13 of 14) with 0.8 left on the clock.
Senior Eric Dietrich made three three-pointers in scoring 17 points. Junior Collin Jordan netted 12. Junior Tom Arisco and sophomore Andrew Yamin had eight. Senior Erik Pettit (seven) and junior Tyler Post (five) also added to the scoring column.
Simsbury, led by sophomore Eric Crawford (game-high 34 points), led 29-25 at halftime. Crawford scored his last squad's final 22 points.
The Rams advance to visit Bridgeport Central (10th; 17-4) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Bridgeport Central eliminated Bristol Central (23rd; 12-9) 71-43.
