Cheshire High School senior wrestler Billy Janes reached his first Class LL final on Saturday, taking second (3-1) against Manchester senior second seed Brian Donovan at 182 pounds. He beat sophomore Calvin Williams (Weaver/Hartford Public; fourth) 13-7 and top-seeded sophomore Austin Sullivan (Southington) 12-7 earlier in the day.
Senior Dan Massucci (138, fourth) and junior Jake Cervero (132, third) took fourth and fifth places, respectively. Massucci defeated sophomore James Leuci (Newtown, fifth) 6-4 and senior John DePasquale (Simsbury, sixth) 3-2 on Saturday. Cervero was victorious against junior Kevin Cecio (Trumbull; 11th) 5-2 and Westhill junior Jeff Glover (fourth) 9-6.
Senior Josh Hunihan picked up a 10-9 decision against senior Ryan DuPuis (third) of Southington. The Rams ended up 14th (67 points) as a team. Danbury was the champion (215.5).
Janes (28-10), Massucci (37-8), and Cervero (30-8) all reached the State Open to be held next Friday and Saturday at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. It is the second straight season that Massucci and Cervero earned bids. Janes had never competed in Class LL before.

Indoor Track And Field
CHS girls' (12th place, 12 points) and boys' (21st, two) visited New Haven's Floyd Little Athletic Center for the Class LL Championship. Junior Selina Sampieri cleared 10 feet for fourth in pole vault. Senior Kathleen Kalbian (1,600-meters, 5:23.69) and junior Liam Nicoll (300-meters, 37.01) took fifth. Kalbian also contributed to her 4x800-meter relay team (senior Jenna Hart, junior Kimmi Grove, senior Hannah Purtell; 10:06.03).
Sophomore Alexandra Pelletier was involved in three eighth places: 600-meters (1:42.54), 4x200- (sophomore Jamiya Richardson, senior Nicole Stauffer, junior Kristin Cabrera; 1:50.83) and 4x400-meter (Grove, Hart, Stauffer; 4:21.98). Sophomore Natalie Wickenheisser (3,200-meters, 11:53.41) and freshman Janaia Skibitcky (long jump; 15 feet, 5.5 inches) posted sixth places, while Cabrera (long jump; 15, five) and senior Emily Gomes (shot put; 30, four) were seventh. Junior Patricia Larson tied for eighth through shot put (29, seven). Richardson, sophomore Elissa Aldrich, junior Danielle Bellantonio, and Wickenheisser teamed up for seventh in the 1,600-meter sprint medley relay (4:39.41).
On the boys' side, the 4x800-meter team (sophomore Mark Fusco, junior Ben Kaplan, senior Sagar Nakrani, junior Trey Phillips; 8:40.46) finished eighth.
The State Open runs Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Ice Hockey (4-12)
On Senior Night, at Wesleyan University, the Rams came up a goal short 3-2 against North Haven (4-9-2) in overtime. North Haven junior Vin Fasulo (assist) buried the golden goal with 1:45 left.
Cheshire scored both their goals in the first three minutes of the second period to erase a 1-0 deficit after the second. Junior Alex Bausch netted the team's first goal to even the score. Thirty three seconds later, senior Tyler Lima deposited the puck in front of the net. Senior goalkeeper Scott Romano (36 saves), juniors Dan Purslow and Jonathan Hauser, and sophomore Ben Klanica all tallied assists. North Haven senior Karl Anderson (assist) tied the score 2-2 with 14 seconds remaining in the second period.
Senior goalkeeper Scott Romano posted 36 saves. Cheshire took 31 shots. Senior honorees were captain Tom Dupont, Lima, Romano, Jack Naramore, Jake Nesdale, Sean Richard, and Nick Vaill.
North Haven sophomore Andrew Graziano had 29 saves in net. Senior teammate Dylan VanBrammer scored the opening goal and added an assist. Junior Christopher Lion added an assist.
CHS hosts Guilford (8-5-2) on Tuesday at Northford Ice Pavilion. Start time is 4 p.m. Cheshire earned their first win 2-1 on Jan. 26 in East Haven.
Cheerleading (fourth, 59.3)
