Sampieri Wins SCC Pole Vault Again, Boys' Swim And Dive Sinks Naugatuck

On Friday, Cheshire High School girls' (third, 49 points) and boys' (10th, 19) indoor track and field competed in the Southern Connecticut Conference Championship at New Haven's Floyd Little Athletic Center. junior Selina Sampieri tied her school mark (10 feet) to win the pole vault for the second straight year.
Seniors Kathleen Kalbian (3,200-meters, 11:55.14) and Hannah Purtell (1,000-meters, 3:10.08) each finished third. They combined to finish second with the 4x800-meter team (senior Jenna Hart, junior Kimmi Grove; 9:57.66). Grove placed fifth in the 300-meters (43.94) and added third place with her 4x400-meter squad (junior Danielle Bellantonio, senior Nicole Stauffer, Hart; 4:21.16).
Cheshire nabbed another third with their 1,600-meter sprint medley squad (sophomores Jamiya Richardson and Elissa Aldrich, junior Michelle Federico, sophomore Natalie Wickenheisser; 4:42.5). Junior Katie Cavallaro (high jump; four feet, eight inches) and freshman Janaia Skibitcky (long jump; 15 feet, 10 inches) each came in fifth overall.
For the boys, junior Liam Nicoll took second in the 300-meters (36.91). The 4x800-meter team of sophomore Mark Fusco, junior Ben Kaplan, senior Sagar Nakrani, and junior Trey Phillips secured the bronze medal (8:35.12). Kaplan posted sixth for the 1,000-meters (2:48.83), while senior Joe Nowak leapt five feet and eight inches to take fourth in high jump.
The Class LL Championship is next Friday, starting 4 p.m., in New Haven.
Boys' Swim And Dive (7-4)
At Cheshire Community Pool, the Rams beat Naugatuck 102-83. Freshman Karl Bishop claimed the 200- (1:54.09) and 500-yard (5:07.01) freestyles. He also anchored the 400-yard freestyle team (freshman Kyle Shadeck, junior Pat Morley, freshman Alex Cheruk; 3:41.38) to victory. Johnson (100-yard backstroke, 1:00.65), Morley (200-yard individual medley, 2:17.35), and Shadeck (100-yard butterfly, 57.49) were also victorious. Before winning individually, they teamed with freshman Michael Goodrich to take the 200-yard medley relay (1:47.73).
CHS hosts Daniel Hand on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Boys' Basketball (8-6; 5-2 in Housatonic Division)
Cheshire lost 74-56 at Shelton (7-8; 3-4). The loss splits the series at 1-1. Shelton netted 20 of the 23 points in the second quarter. Senior Eric Dietrich scored a team-best 20 points, while sophomore Andrew Yamin netted 11.
The Rams host Wilbur Cross (13-2) on Monday at 6 p.m. Cross earned a 61-54 home win on Jan. 11.
Girls' Basketball (8-9; 4-2)
Defending Southern Connecticut Conference Champion Career Magnet (14-2) swept visiting Cheshire by a score of 55-43. Junior Missy Bailey and sophomore Sara Como had 11 and 10 points, respectively, in the loss. Senior Emma Gorham (eight rebounds) supplied seven.
The Lady Rams visit Sheehan (8-7; 3-3) on Monday at 7 p.m. Sheehan won 57-47 on Jan. 11 in Cheshire.
