Isabel Piedrahita has an interesting birthday date this year — 12-12-12.
On Wednesday, as the numbers align perfectly, Isabel will turn 11 years old.
However, while many children her age would be excited for birthday gifts and cake, Isabel and her family have other priorities in mind.
The Piedrahita family will use Isabel's birthday as a chance to hold a Donation Drive to help a New Jersey family displaced by Hurricane Sandy.
In an email sent out to family and friends, Isabel's mother, Cristina Piedrahita, explained what had happened:
"A few days ago a close family friend shared the heartbreaking story of one of the many families that were affected by Storm Sandy.
Kevin and Christine lived in Union Beach, NJ, with their three children: Max and Jake (6-year-old twins), Luke (2), and Kevin’s mother. On the day of the storm they were in a mandatory evacuation zone and left, taking only a few overnight items to stay with Christine’s parents. Their house was lifted off the foundation and moved about 40 feet into the street. The house was originally built eight feet above ground, and the water line in the house was over four feet high. Everything below the water line was destroyed and the house is uninhabitable. They have since moved into Christine’s parents’ house and will stay there until they can start rebuilding their lives.
As you can imagine the list of things they need is endless."
Cristina went on in the email to explain that the focus of the Donation Drive will be on items for the children, namely new or gently-used clothing, small toys, and books. She stressed that the children need all types of clothing, even if it is not their exact size.
Cristina also mentioned that she and her family are requesting "any ideas about a small treat for mom, dad, or grandma."
The Donation Drive will beat 28 Lanyon Drive from 3 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 12.
