CHS Boys' Soccer Drops Heartbreaker At Newtown

Cheshire High School boys’ soccer (24th seed; 7-6-4) closed the season with a 2-1 loss against host Newtown (ninth; 12-2-3) in the Class LL First Round. At Treadwell Town Park, Newtown senior Eric Fiore posted the game-winner with 30 seconds remaining of the second overtime.
Newtown took the 1-0 lead (23 minutes) on a goal by junior Nathan Kalra. Senior Charles Helgren had the assist. Senior Nick Berardi recorded the tying goal (34 minutes; 1-1).
Newtown led 18-8 in shots. Senior goalkeeper Evan Colechia registered nine saves.
Cheshire graduates Alex Bauer (captain), Berardi (captain), Sam Donahue (captain), Devin Lerner (captain), Matt Mueller (captain), Ross Caterino, Colechia, Ben Gallo, Billy Janes, Robert McNabb, Matt Mendonca.
Football (5-3)
Cheshire visits Hamden (1-6) on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The following capsules are for Saturday’s start of state tournaments
Field Hockey (second seed; 17-2)
Cheshire carries a five-game shutout streak into the Class L First Round against William Hall (15th; 9-6-2) at Alumni Field. Start time is 11 a.m. Hall beat Newtown (18th; 6-9-0-2) 3-2 through two overtimes of today's qualifier. Cheshire is the defending champion.
Girls’ Soccer (seventh; 12-3-2)
Cheshire hosts New Milford for the Class LL First Round at 3 p.m. The Lady Rams were a quarterfinalist last season.
Girls’ Volleyball (second; 19-1)
After a first-round bye, CHS hosts Westhill (15th; 12-7) in the Class LL Second Round at 6 p.m. Westhill beat Danbury (18th; 9-10) 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-20) in yesterday's qualifier.
Cheshire has reached the semifinals in the last two seasons.
Girls’ Swimming
The Lady Rams visit East Harford for Class LL qualifying at 6 p.m. Warm-up is 4:30-5:55 p.m.
