SOUTHBURY – Elverda van Buskirk Kelly, 89, a longtime resident of Liberty Corner, N.J., passed away on October 4, 2012 at Elim Park Baptist Home in Cheshire, Conn. following a long illness. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1923, daughter of Houghton E. and Margaret Mumm van Buskirk, and was predeceased by her husband, Mitchell Kelly, and a sister, Elise Kane. She is survived by a son, Van Kelly of Bernardsville, N.J. and his wife, Cheryl Keefe; a daughter, Kelly Briney of Naugatuck, Conn. and her husband,
Michael; and three grandchildren.
Mrs. Kelly grew up in Hempstead, Long Island. She studied writing and journalism at Wheaton College and New York University. After moving to New Jersey, she began a career in journalism as a magazine editor in the late 1940s. After the birth of her children, she worked many years in the Bernards Township school system as a secretary and office manager. Later in life, she embarked on a third career in pharmaceutical marketing at Health Products Research in Whitehouse, N.J., retiring in 1997 at the
age of 74.
Upon retirement, she moved to Heritage Village in Southbury to be near her grandchildren. An avid reader, she remained active in book groups and enjoyed leading Bible studies.
