Cheshire High School field hockey earned the school's 24th straight win (3-0 in 2012) 2-0 against Daniel Hand (1-2). In the second half, junior Michelle Federico assisted classmate Emma Farrel and also scored the second goal. Senior goalkeeper Lauren Fountain (personal-best 12 saves) earned the shutout.
The Lady Rams host Mercy on Friday at Cheshire Alumni Field. Start time is 6 p.m.
Cross Country (3-0; 1-0 in Housatonic Division)
The Rams beat host East Haven (15-50), Lyman Hall (15-50), and North Haven (22-37) to start the dual-meet schedule. Top finishers were seniors Sam Brown (second, 18:03) and Sagar Nakrani (third, 18:04), sophomore Mark Fusco (fourth, 18:06), junior Lucas Marcouiller (sixth, 18:35), and sophomore Russell Adam (seventh, 18:39).
Girls defeated East Haven and Lyman Hall by the same scores and won 22-39 against NOrth Haven. Senior Kathleen Kalbian was first overall (21:20). Sophomore Natalie Wickenheisser (third, 22:24) and Sharon Bian (fifth, 22:39) junior Kimmi Grove (sixth, 22:52), and sophomore Kendra Brown (seventh, 23:11) also added to the win.
Cheshire visits Madison's Surf Club to run host Daniel Hand on Monday at 4 p.m.
Girls' Volleyball (4-0)
Senior Brittney Gunneson posted six aces and three kills during this sweep (25-10, 25-17, 25-6) of Wilbur Cross (0-4). Sophomore Sarah Rodgers had 13 assists, tying and junior Eryn Dorsey with a career-high five aces.
Friday's Housatonic opener against Sheehan starts at 6:30 p.m.
Girls' Soccer (2-1)
Hamden senior Rachel Ugolik scored six minutes into the second half to signal Cheshire's first loss. Cheshire took 21 shots to three for Hamden. Junior goalkeeper Natalie Reynolds added a save.
Cheshire kicks off the Housatonic slate on Friday at Amity. Start time is 3:45 p.m.
