Relay, Torch Run Set For Today

The 2012 Relay For Life kicks off this afternoon, as hundreds of residents will make their way to the Cheshire High School athletic fields behind the school to participate in one of the town's biggest events.
Preparation for the big event is scheduled to begin in the early afternoon, with the annual Kids Care! tent opening at 4 p.m. Opening ceremonies are scheduled for around 6 p.m. and activities will take place throughout the night and into early Saturday afternoon.
Also, motorists are reminded that the annual Connecticut Special Olympics Torch Run will be travelling through Cheshire today between the hours of 12 and 3 p.m.
Motorists should expect delays and heavy traffic during this time. The runners will be escorted by state and local police as they make their way along Route 10 from Southington to the Hamden town line.
A schedule of Relay activities follows:

Friday, June 8

11 a.m. — Gate opens for entrance from Elmwood Drive.
1:30 to 5 p.m. — Team captain check-in at the registration tent. All teams are required to check in. Young adult teams must be accompanied by a chaperone.
1 to 8:30 p.m. — Luminaria and torch sales open.
2 p.m. — Finance opens for collection of fundraising.
2 p.m. — Elmwood Drive gate closes. All cars must exit trackside areas. Absolutely no parking on the track.
4 to 6 p.m. — Kids Care! meets at Relay Cafe tent.
4 to 10 p.m. — Food court open.
4 p.m. — Silent auction and prize drawings open.
4:30 to 5:30 p.m. — Miss Relay competition.
5 p.m. — The Survivor Tent opens.
5:30 p.m. — Kids Care! takes to the track.
6 p.m. — Opening ceremonies on the main stage.
6:30 to 7:15 p.m. — Bachelor auction on Main Stage.
7 to 8:45 p.m. — Survivor reception begins at the Survivor Tent.
7:15 to 8:15 p.m. — Performance by 42nd Street Band.
8:15 p.m. — Silent auction and prize drawings closed for the evening.
8:30 p.m. — Finance closes collection of fundraising until morning.
8:45 p.m. — Luminaria ceremony in memory of Beth Tenebaum on Main Stage.
10 p.m. — Cheshire Idol on Main Stage.
11:15 p.m. — Volleyball teams report to gymnasium. Participants must wear their event wristband to return to Relay.

Saturday, June 9

12 a.m. — Farley-Toce Memorial Volleyball at Cheshire High School.
12: 30 to 7 a.m. — Quiet hours.
2 to 4 a.m. — Outdoor movie at Main Stage (Cool Running).
6:30 to 9:30 a.m. — Breakfast sandwiches at concession stand by AAA and Relay For Life Planning Committee.
7 a.m. — Wake up call.
7 to 8 a.m. — Zumba by Donna Paventi at Main Stage, with participants on center field.
7:30 a.m. — Silent auction and prize drawings open.
8 a.m. — Finance reopens to collect fundraising.
8 a.m. — Survivor breakfast reception at Survivor Tent.
8 to 10 a.m. — Musical requests with PowerStation. There is a $1 request to hear your favorite song, and a $2 donation to stop a song.
9 a.m. — Luminaria bag pick up begins.
10 a.m. — Silent auction and prize drawings closed.
11 a.m. — Silent auction and prize drawing winners announced at Main Stage.
12 p.m. — Closing ceremonies and team fundraising achievements.
12:15 p.m. — Elmwood Drive gate reopens for breakdown and clean up of sites.
