CHS Volleyball Star To Have Signing Ceremony

May 3, 2012 by Greg Lederer

Cheshire High School will hold a signing ceremony for senior middle hitter Kelly Gunneson on Tuesday at 2:15 p.m. in the library. All are invited to attend. Gunneson, who lettered four years for Head Coach Sue Bavone, will play volleyball at Southern Connecticut State University.
Gunneson topped Cheshire in kills and blocks for two years, totaling 278 and 71, respectively, in 2011.
Classmate Gina Buzzelli (setter; Trinity College) and Gunneson were Offensive Players of the Year/All-State Second Team/All-Housatonic Division. Kerry Chavoya (libero; Central Connecticut State University) was All-Housatonic, too, and captained CHS with Buzzelli.
Cheshire went 23-1 last season. They lost 3-0 for the second straight year in the Class LL semifinals against Class LL Champion Newtown. They went unbeaten in the regular season, earning a four-peat in the Housatonic Division (8-0) and taking their eighth Southern Connecticut Conference Championship (SCC mark).
SCSU, coached by Lisa Barbaro, went 19-11 (8-7 in Northeast-10 Conference) last season.
