CHS Tennis Takes Morning Matches

Cheshire High School tennis swept matches this morning. The boys shut out East Haven 7-0 for their fourth straight win (5-1). Seniors Tyler Hajjar (6-1, 6-0), Drew Henderson (6-1, 6-0), Tanner Barros (6-2, 6-1), along with juniors Andrew Carroll (2-6, 6-3, 6-4) and Blake Wetmore (6-2, 6-2) collected victories in singles. Carroll and Wetmore hadn't played yet this season.
Seniors Brad Mahar and Usama Choudhry (6-0, 6-0) and freshmen Jackson Ajello and Abdullah Choudhry (6-3, 6-0) won in doubles.
At Wesleyan University, the Lady Rams (2-3) won their second straight 5-2 over host Mercy. Seniors Erica Larson (6-1, 6-3) and Katie Seggerman (6-3, 6-4) topped singles. Seniors Taylor Strange and Alex Hirt (6-0, 6-1), juniors Anna Toscano and Maegan McGee (6-3, 6-2), and senior Theresa Fitzpatrick and junior Lindsey Garibaldi (6-2, 6-2) comprised the second doubles sweep in a row. Girls host Joseph Foran on Monday at 3:45 p.m.
Boys' Volleyball (4-0)
At Maloney (1-4), Cheshire took their 26th straight victory by scores of 25-14, 25-13, and 25-12. Junior Evan Colechia posted a personal-best 14 kills. Seniors also made an impact. Ray Brumleve compiled 39 assists, 19 kills of which went to classmates Ryan Cuppernull (15 kills, five digs) and Matt Ward (five kills, four blocks).
Cheshire hosts Daniel Hand (2-2) on Friday at 6 p.m.
Girls' Outdoor Track And Field (5-1)
Cheshire defeated Career (100-48), Jonathan Law (101-49), and Mercy (97-53). Sophomore Selina Sampieri captured pole vault (nine feet) and triple jump (32 feet, four inches). Freshman Alexandra Pelletier joined in her on the victorious 4x100-meter squad (sophomores Kaitlin Cavallaro and Kristin Cabrera; 52.7). Pelletier individually won the 400-meters (60.4).
Juniors Emily Gomes (shot put; 27 feet, eight inches) and Brittany Gunneson (javelin; 77 feet, 10 inches), and Cavallaro (high jump; four feet, six inches) added first places. Senior Nicole Adam, junior Hannah Purtell, sophomore Kim Grove, and senior Amanda Chang teamed up to claim the 4x800-meter relay (10:57.3).

The Lady Rams face host Lyman Hall and Hamden on Tuesday at 3:45 p.m.
Softball (4-3; 1-1 in Housatonic Division)
Junior Nicole D’Amato (two strikeouts and walks apiece) allowed 10 hits in a 9-3 loss at Sheehan (5-2; 1-0). Freshman Sara Como supplied two hits, including an RBI single and triple. Sophomores Bryanna McIntosh (single) and sophomore Alyssa Hajjar (courtesy runner) and freshman Casey Harding (single) added runs.
The Lady Rams visit Shelton (3-3; 0-1) on Friday at 4 p.m.
Baseball (2-5; 0-2)
Sheehan scored three times in the top of the ninth inning, dealing host CHS it's third straight loss. The Rams hoped to walk-off with a win in the seventh, but senior Adam Rider was gunned down at the plate after the third hit from senior Jordan Kubilus.
Kubilus was three-for-three. He walked in the first inning and scored on a single by sophomore Ethan Lonardelli. Before giving way to junior Zach Goul (hit) in the ninth, Kubilus (11 hits) struck out four and yielded a walk. Sheehan junior Rob Sprafke went the distance.
Sophomore Dan Schock added two hits.
Cheshire hosts North Haven on Friday at 4 p.m.
