As a result of Hurricane Irene, Cheshire Public Schools will be closed on Monday.
The decision to cancel school, which was supposed to be the first day of classes for students in Cheshire, was made Saturday afternoon. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Greg Florio said on Friday that it would be a "wait and see" approach with regards to canceling school. He hoped to make a decision sooner rather than later to give residents as much notice as possible.
The first day of school is now scheduled for Tuesday, August 30. Of course, this could change depending on the havoc Irene is expected to create Saturday night and all-day Sunday. Utility companies have crews on standby throughout the state in anticipation of widespread power outages. Cheshire workers are also on call to deal with any debris and road closures throughout the town.
Stay with The Cheshire Herald throughout the weekend, as updates will be posted as they become available.
