Waverly Tavern Closing After Nearly Two Decades

February 8, 2011 by Josh Morgan

After nearly 19 years in business, John Glass is shutting down the Waverly Tavern on Feb. 19.
Glass confirmed the rumors swirling around town to be true earlier this week, when he told The Herald that the economy took its toll on the Waverly.
For the past two years, revenue has been on the decline all while expenses continued to rise.
"For the last two years, there has been a major drop in business," Glass explained. "Unfortunately, all the other costs were spiraling up."
According to Glass, it "didn't make economic sense" to remain in business. The lease Glass has with Stop & Shop expires at the beginning of March, something he will not be renewing. Glass doesn't have to be out of the Waverly Tavern until Feb. 28, but he decided to close earlier so he can clean up and collect this personal things.

Sad to see it is closing. It was where I went to my Senior Prom and then the Bicentennial Ball with my Uncle. Holds a lot of fond memories.

This is sad to see the Waverly name exiting the Cheshire scene after all the years. What does this leave the town for retirement parties, showers, post funeral gatherings, and numerous other events. Where are we to get our weekend prime ribs?
I guess we should have patronized them more often but it's too late now.
