Reihl Chosen For First Women's National Ice Hockey Team

September 2, 2010 by Greg Lederer

Pennsylvania State University (Happy Valley) sophomore defenseman Lindsay Reihl, a 2009 Cheshire High School graduate, was among 22 American Collegiate Hockey Association players selected for the 25th Winter World University Games, scheduled for Jan. 27 to Feb. 6, 2011 in Erzurum, Turkey. Penn State’s Mo Stroemel will coach the first national women’s team at the bi-annual ice hockey tournament.
“My coach called me two days ago. We were having a nonchalant conversation and then he asked if I wanted to go to Turkey with them,” recalled Reihl, who was the 2009-10 PSU Defensive Player of the Year (two goals, four assists; 26 games). “I couldn’t believe it. It’s such an honor.”
A tryout camp was held Aug. 6-8 in Grand Rapids, Mich. Forty girls between two teams played three scrimmages.
“We lost the first two games and then beat them on the third day,” said Reihl. “We had one practice on Saturday when they put us through drills.”
Penn State teammates Katie Vaughn, Heather Rossi, and Denise Rohlik were also selected. Kate Christofferson, Reihl’s roommate, is one of six alternates. Lindenwood University (Saint Charles, Missouri) leads with five players. Michigan State University (East Lansing) received four like PSU.
“It’s exciting. Two of them (Rossi, Rohlik) went to France last year for a different type of tournament,” added Reihl.
