Behind a local goalkeeper, the University of New Hampshire (Durham) women's soccer team is off to program's strongest start (1-0-2) since 2001. That was also the last time that the Wildcats claimed the TD Bank Classic Championship. Freshman Erica Correa, a 2010 Cheshire High School graduate, made a career-high eight saves yesterday, as the Wildcats tied Rider University (1-1) at the University of Vermont. Senior Ashley Avitabile tied the game in the 65th minute. The teams battled through double-overtime.
UNH defeated La Salle University (2-1) on Friday. So when La Salle clipped Vermont 3-2, the Wildcats won the TD Bank Classic. Correa was named Defensive MVP, recording 13 saves (16 in 2010). She joined senior sisters Ashley Avitabile and Amy Avitabile (game-winner against La Salle) on the All-Tournament team.
The Wildcats visit the College of the Holy Cross on Sept. 3, at 7 p.m.
