Copes Makes CHS History At State Open

March 2, 2010 by Greg Lederer

Cheshire High School saw wrestling history on Sunday Night. Senior Kyle Copes became the school's first State Open Champion, after defeating top-seeded Middletown sophomore Devon Carrillo 11-3 at 171 pounds. Copes, who already holds the record for career wins, improved his season record to 43-1. He didn't trail once during four victories at the New Haven Athletic Center.
Sheehan senior Nick Giulietti (top seed; 32-0 record) also defeated Maloney's Aaron Cardona (third seed) 5-4 for his first State Open crown at 140 pounds. Sheehan doesn't have a wrestling program, so Giulietti receives coaching and practices with CHS.
Copes and Giulietti both earned their first New England appearances. The regional meet will be held March 5-6 in New Haven. Read in-depth about the State Open in the March 4 issue of The Cheshire Herald.
