CJF Sweeps Amity On Opening Day

On Aug. 29, Cheshire Junior Football successfully kicked off the 2010 season at Cheshire High School. Seventh grade (31-12), sixth grade (32-6), and fifth grade ‘A’ (25-0) beat Amity. In the final home game, fourth grade ‘A’ lost to North Haven ‘B’ by a score of 25-0.
Cheshire eighth graders also came up short 41-18 at Madison. Find an online preview of week two on Sunday.

Reihl Chosen For First Women's National Ice Hockey Team

Pennsylvania State University (Happy Valley) sophomore defenseman Lindsay Reihl, a 2009 Cheshire High School graduate, was among 22 American Collegiate Hockey Association players selected for the 25th Winter World University Games, scheduled for Jan. 27 to Feb. 6, 2011 in Erzurum, Turkey. Penn State’s Mo Stroemel will coach the first national women’s team at the bi-annual ice hockey tournament.

Youthful Girls' Soccer Team Keeps Goals

Cheshire High School girls' soccer head coach Tony Crane hasn't led his team without the Class of 2010. Crane and 10 graduates entered the program at the same time in 2006.
“It is actually kind of strange,” said Crane. “I've had the three (2010) captains for four years, too.”

Martial Artists Test Their Skills At Taekwando Tournament

Cheshire martial artist Jonathan Barbieri knew something wasn't right while standing atop the medal platform at the 2010 Junior Olympic Taekwondo Championship in Orlando, Fla. Barbieri trailed by four points with four seconds left in the 12-13 Male Red Sparring Final. But, his opponent accidentally kicked him in the face and had to forfeit the match.

Wiffle Ball Tournament This Saturday

The Teddy Kaplita Honorary Wiffle Ball Tournament is running Sept. 4, at Bartlem Recreation Area. Kaplita, a 14-year-old Cheshire Youth Baseball player and Cheshire High School freshman, underwent an emergency heart transplant this summer. Proceeds will help defray expenses from his hospitalization.

Coach John Spadafina has rejoined the Cheshire YMCA Sea Dog Swim Club for the 2010-11 short course season. Spadafina joined the Sea Dogs in 2007, instructing the Age Group II and Junior teams.
