Final Election Vote Count

November 6, 2009 by Josh Morgan

The final Town Council seat has finally been decided, with Anne Giddings beating out a fellow Republican due to votes not being tallied earlier.
On Election Night, Giddings appeared to have more votes than fellow Republican At-Large candidate Sylvia Nichols. However, on Wednesday morning the votes were tallied and Nichols had roughly 30 more votes than Giddings.
While a mandatory recount was not needed, officials noticed what appeared to be a discrepancy in Giddings’ total from the second district. While the four other Republican At-Large candidates received over 400 votes apiece in Chapman School voting, Giddings received 256. After looking into the matter, it was discovered that 200 votes were not added to Giddings’ total following the election.
Elections staff are still unsure how the mix up occurred, and will continue to look for the cause of the error. No votes were taken away from any other candidates, rather, those 200 votes were never properly credited to Giddings, staff said.
The Town Council has now been officially been set with a 7-2 Republican majority. For a complete story, see the Nov. 12 issue of The Cheshire Herald.
