CHS Ice Hockey Explodes For Comeback Win Over Hand On Tuesday, Nguyen To Dive In Class LL Meet On Thursday

On Tuesday, Cheshire High School ice hockey (sixth seed, 12-9) came back to beat Daniel Hand (11th, 9-11-1) 5-1 in the Division II First Round at Wesleyan University. The senior class won their final home game and the Rams won the season series (2-0) with the Tigers.
Hand went up 1-0 on goal by junior Paul Gagliardi in the first period. Sophomore Ian Rice picked up the assist.
With 35 seconds remaining in the second, sophomore James Ilnicki put in the tying goal. Senior assistant captain Matt Federico scored the eventual game-winner 15 seconds into the third. Federico added two more goals, including a short-handed tally, to secure a hat trick.
Junior Jared Purslow also contributed a goal in the third. Seniors Conrad Reynolds and Ammar Chaudhry contributed assists in the third. Senior assistant captain/goalkeeper Tom Bishop finished with 27 saves.
The Rams outshot Hand 37-28. Hand senior goalkeeper Robert Smith made 32 saves.
For quarterfinal action on Friday at the Milford Ice Pavilion, Cheshire will play New Fairfield/Immaculate Co-Op (third, 16-4-2) at 7 p.m. CHS will aim to avenge a 3-2 overtime loss on Jan. 14.
Thursday's varsity schedule:
Senior captain Ryan Nguyen will compete in the Class LL meet at Hamden. Start time is 5:30 p.m.
