Murray Shines In Class LL Races On Wednesday, Rams Drop Rivalry Meet In The Pool, Girls' Ice Hockey Team Extends Win Streak

On Wednesday, Cheshire High School junior track runner Brendan Murray finished third in the 1,600-meters (4:26.44) and fourth in the 3,200-meters (9:36.24) during the Class LL Championship at New Haven's Floyd Little Athletic Center. Senior Trevor Steskla placed 12th in shot put (41 feet, 7.25 inches).
The Floyd Little Athletic Center hosts the State Open on Saturday at 4 p.m.
Boys' Swim and Dive (10-1)
In a match-up of unbeaten Southern Connecticut Conference teams, the Rams came up short 107-76 against Fairfield Prep (11-0) at Fairfield University. Junior Ben Brewer won four events and senior Jamie Eigner was victorious in three races. Brewer was an individual winner in the 200- (2:01.88) and 400-meter (4:22.46) freestyles. Eigner captured the 50-meter freestyle (25.00).
Eigner, sophomore Joe Cannata, junior Jack Hanke, and Brewer picked up a victory in the 200-meter freestyle relay (1:43.04). Brewer, Hanke, junior Dara Malone, and Eigner formed the winning squad in the 400-meter freestyle relay (3:47.45).
On Feb. 27, Cheshire Community Pool will host the SCC Qualifier at 4 p.m.
Girls' Ice Hockey (11-5)
At Northford Pavilion, Amity/North Haven/Cheshire Co-Op picked up their fifth straight victory 3-1 over host Daniel Hand (10-7-2). Hand went up 1-0 in the opening period, but the Connecticut Blades posted three goals in the third period to secure the win and even the season series at 1-1.
North Haven sophomores Shannon Reilly and Jackie Howlett (assist) and Amity freshman Haley Cable put in goals. Amity sophomore Andrea Delvechio provided 30 saves. The Blades outshot Hand 31-16.
Hand senior Bradie Stryker scored the opening goal from junior Bridget Dwyer.
On Thursday, the Blades travel to Newington Ice Rink to face host East Catholic/Glastonbury/South Windsor Co-Op (8-3-6) at 3:40 p.m.

Boys' Basketball (10-9, 4-4 in Hammonasset Division)
CHS ends the regular season against West Haven (10-8) on Senior Night at 7 p.m.
Senior players: Jensen Bassett (tri-captain), Drew Hart (tri-captain), Mike Quint (tri-captain), Derek Frione, Matt Geyda, Evan Russo.
Senior cheerleaders: Kaitlyn D'Andrea (co-captain), Alexis Yamin (co-captain), Natalie Dicks, Rosa Palmieri, Liana Quinones.
On Dec. 27, West Haven won the first meeting 49-45 over the visiting Rams.
