On Saturday, Cheshire High School girls' basketball (4-15, 1-7 in Housatonic Division) fell 57-54 in overtime at West Haven (7-11, 2-6). The Rams went up 20-19 at halftime and led 34-32 at the end of the third quarter, but West Haven came back to take a 50-48 advantage with 9.3 seconds remaining in regulation. Junior Emily Yonych put in a layup with three seconds left to tie the game.
West Haven outscored the Rams 7-4 in overtime to earn a split of the season series.
After missing nine games due to injury, sophomore Mia Juodaitis returned to tie junior tri-captain Julia Schaff (two three-pointers) with a team-best 12 points. Junior tri-captain Sara Mulligan scored 11 points, posting three three-pointers. Yonych earned seven points.
Freshman Emma Watkinson contributed a four-point play. Junior Mia Pulisciano also chipped in four points. Junior Brady McQuade and freshman Ariana Perlini secured two points apiece.
West Haven senior Jaymesha Sanders netted a game-high 28 points.
On Monday, Cheshire aims to snap a five-game slide when hosting Lauralton Hall (4-15) in the season finale at 7 p.m. Tri-captain Kaylyn Clairmont will be honored on Senior Night. Lauralton Hall came away victorious 41-31 in the first meeting on Dec. 22.
Girls' Indoor Track and Field
Cheshire secured 19th place (five points) in the Class L Championship at New Haven's Floyd Little Athletic Center. Sophomore Cali Lonardelli picked up fourth in pole vault (seven feet, six inches). Senior Camille Lewis, sophomore Amanda Addesso, and juniors Rachel Kaplan and Lauren Daddi placed sixth in the 4x800-meter relay (10:14.11).
Daddi came in ninth in the 1,600-meters (5:36.95). Senior tri-captain Abigail DelVecchio contributed eighth in the 55-meter hurdles (9.66). Senior Lizzy Goul was ninth in the high jump (4'8").
Lewis (3:24.37), Kaplan (3:25.15), and Addesso (3:25.76) finished from 10th to 12th in the 1,000-meters. Sophomore Giselle Zumerchik earned 11th in long jump (14'3.75") and tied for 13th in the 55-meter hurdles (10.01). Junior Jess Zanca added 13th in long jump (13'7.5"). Senior Sarah Pierpont tied for 20th in the 55-meters (8.00). Classmate Maya Kreidwise took 20th in the 1,600-meters (5:48.38).
Freshman Ruth DelVecchio, senior tri-captain Lexie Gula, Pierpont, and Abigail DelVecchio nabbed 16th in the 4x200-meter relay (1:58.56). Senior Chelum Okoro, sophomores Sophie Cremo and Aliza Taylor, and Abigail DelVecchio secured 12th in the 4x400-meter relay (4:32.66). Zumerchik, Ruth DelVecchio, Cremo, and Taylor supplied 12th in the 1,600-meter sprint medley relay (4:47.79).
On Sunday in New Haven, Cheshire boys will compete in the Class LL meet at 12:30 p.m.
Girls' Ice Hockey (9-5)
Amity/North Haven/Cheshire Co-Op nabbed their third consecutive win 4-1 over Notre Dame-Fairfield/Foran Co-Op (9-8) at The Rinks at Shelton, earning a 2-0 advantage in the season series. The Connecticut Blades received a goal and an assist from Amity junior Olivia Dittman and North Haven freshman Melissa Montesi. Amity freshmen Haley Cable and Sara Cable also posted goals. CHS sophomore Meaghan Hogan added an assist.
On Sunday, the Blades host Masuk/Joel Barlow/Newtown/Oxford Co-Op (4-10) at 7:15 p.m. The Blades won 8-1 on Dec. 18.
Boys' Ice Hockey (9-8)
At Avon Old Farms School, the Rams came up short 6-2 against host Farmington Valley Co-Op (12-2) to end a four-game win streak.
Junior Liam Killea and senior assistant captain Matt Federico put in goals for CHS. Junior Sawyer Hackett secured his first assist/point. In net, senior assistant captain Tom Bishop compiled 20 saves and junior Anthony Vignola contributed six.
Farmington Valley outshot the Rams 32-29.
Next Saturday, CHS will host Simsbury (8-7) on Senior Night for 10 boys at Wesleyan University. The final regular season home game starts at 5:30 p.m.
Cheshire secured fourth place in their competition at Watertown.
