Murray Wins SCC Crown On Friday, Boys' Swim And Dive Stays Unbeaten, Boys' B-Ball Team Falls to Jesuits

On Friday, Cheshire High School junior track and field runner Brendan Murray captured the boys' Southern Connecticut Conference in the 3,200-meters (9:32.85) at New Haven's Floyd Little Athletic Center.
On the girls' side, senior Camille Lewis, sophomores Aliza Taylor and Amanda Addesso, and junior Rachel Kaplan earned runner-up in the 4x800-meter relay (10:15.54). Senior Lizzy Goul tied for fifth place in high jump (four feet, six inches).
CHS boys came in 13th place (10 points) and the girls took 15th (9.5).
Boys' Swim and Dive (10-0)
At Walsh Intermediate School in Branford, the Rams defeated Branford/Guilford Co-Op 84-72. Senior Jamie Eigner captured the 50-yard freestyle (22.92) and contributed to three relay victories.
Juniors Ben Brewer (200-yard freestyle, 1:51.68) and Dara Malone (100-yard butterfly, 57.31), junior Jack Hanke (100-yard freestyle, 52.78), and senior captain Ryan Mostoller (100-yard backstroke, 1:00.44) were also individual winners.
Mostoller, senior Ryan Nguyen, sophomore Ankit Sahasrabudhe, and Eigner won the 200-yard medley relay (1:45.79). Eigner, Malone, freshman Sam Hanke, and Mostoller earned first place in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:37.26). Eigner, Malone, sophomore Joe Cannata, and Brewer secured the top time in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:30.74).
On Feb. 15, Cheshire will aim to defend their SCC regular season crown against Fairfield Prep at Fairfield University. Start time is 7 p.m.
Boys' Basketball (8-8, 2-4 in Hammonasset Division)
CHS lost 74-55 against defending SCC Champion Fairfield Prep (9-8, 7-0), ending a four-game win streak. The Jesuits went up 30-8 and held a 36-15 advantage at halftime. The Rams rallied in the second half, but couldn't pull to within single digits.
Senior tri-captain Drew Hart scored 16 points, 12 coming in the second half. He made all of his eight free throws. Seniors Evan Russo (personal-best 11 points) and Matt Geyda (nine points) each had three three-pointers. Senior tri-captain Mike Quint posted eight points and senior tri-captain Jensen Bassett tallied six.
Senior Derek Frione scored four points. Junior James Pettit sank a free throw.
Winners of four of their last five games, the Rams travel to Sheehan (8-8, 0-7) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Cheshire won 71-53 on Jan. 17.

CHS visits Shelton for the SCC Championship starting at 10:30 a.m.

The Rams host Branford (6-5) at Wesleyan University. Start time is 11 a.m.
Girls' Basketball (4-12, 1-5 in Housatonic Division)
Cheshire hosts Wilton (9-6) at 12 p.m.
Wrestling
CHS travels to face Guilford (host), Glastonbury, and Simsbury at 10 a.m.
Girls' Ice Hockey (7-5)
Amity/North Haven/Cheshire Co-Op visits Bridgeport's Wonderland of Ice to face host Lauralton Hall (1-11) at 6 p.m. The Connecticut Blades won 7-2 on Dec. 21.
