On Wednesday, Cheshire High School boys' basketball (8-7, 2-3 in Hammonasset Division) secured their fourth straight victory 46-43 over host Daniel Hand (1-14) at Polson Middle School. The Tigers led 20-18 at halftime and carried a 36-33 advantage to the fourth quarter before being outscored 12-8 by the Rams.
Senior tri-captain Drew Hart netted a game-high 23 points, 18 in the second half. Senior tri-captain Jensen Bassett contributed 14 points.
Senior Derek Frione netted seven points. Senior tri-captain Mike Quint and junior Eric Angelone both made a free throw.
Along with winning the season series, the Rams qualified for the Southern Connecticut Conference and Class LL Tournaments. On Friday, CHS host defending SCC Champion Fairfield Prep (8-8) at 7 p.m. The Jesuits won 57-43 on Jan. 13.
Ice Hockey (7-7)
At Wesleyan University, Cheshire came back from a 1-0 deficit to defeat Amity (3-9) by a score of 3-1. Senior captain Vinnie Solla scored goals in the second and third periods, the latter of which was the game-winner with 3:48 remaining.
Sophomore Ben O'Connor netted his first varsity goal on an empty net. O'Connor earned an assist on Solla's second goal.
Seniors Ammar Chaudhry and Conrad Reynolds added assists on Solla's tying power-play goal. Senior assistant captain Tom Bishop had 32 saves in net. Amity led 33-31 in shots.
On Saturday, Cheshire hosts Branford (6-5) at 11 a.m.
Girls Basketball (4-12, 1-5 in Housatonic)
CHS came up short 44-33 against Sacred Heart Academy (8-9). SHA led 26-13 at halftime and went on to secure a 2-0 lead in the season series.
Junior tri-captain Julia Schaff paced Cheshire with 11 points. The Rams received five points apiece from juniors Mia Pulisciano and Emily Yonych. Junior Brady McQuade and junior tri-captain Sara Mulligan had four points each. Senior tri-captain Kaylyn Clairmont and sophomore Jade Barnes contributed two points each.
On Saturday, Cheshire hosts Wilton (8-6) at 12 p.m.
The Rams came up short 66-3 at Amity. Sophomore Troy LaRusso posted a 3-1 victory at 106 pounds.
On Saturday, Cheshire competes against Guilford (host), Glastonbury, and Simsbury at 10 a.m.
Thursday's varsity schedule:
Skiing (Boys, 10-7; Girls, 5-9)
CHS teams race Amity, Glastonbury, Ridgefield, Westbrook, and Wilton at Mount Southington. Start time is 4:45 p.m.
