Town Announces Summer Road Work

The Town of Cheshire Public Works Department will be performing the milling and overlay of Town roads. This is scheduled to begin on Monday, Aug. 3.
The following roads will begin to have pavement milled on that date, and is expect to continue throughout the week: Barkledge Court, Brookfield Court, Cranberry Lane, Kristen Court, Patton Drive, Percival Drive, Pine Brook Court, Preston Road, Harvest Court, Red Oak Place, Orchard Hill Road (second course of pavement remaining from last year’s road reconstruction), Burnt Hollow Road, Old Lane Road (Regional Water Authority trench near Mill River), Oregon Road (northern section of loop) and Meadow Brook Drive.
Beginning Monday, Aug. 10, these roads will begin to be overlaid, which is also expected to continue through the entire week. These roads will have bumps at the pavement transitions, driveways and will have elevated catch basins and manholes for a short period of time.
These will be marked as clearly as possible, but residents are asked to use caution. When negotiating these areas, the Town utilizes outside vendors for much of this work, and if they should experience weather delays during these weeks, it will affect the schedule for this work.
Check the Town’s Web site, www.cheshirect.org, for further information and updates. These roads were selected by Town Public Works personnel utilizing a pavement evaluation survey that was conducted by an outside consultant.
The Town expects to perform similar work on other roads at the end of the summer and into early fall.
Also starting in the coming weeks, Public Works will begin chip sealing various town roads. Chip sealing is a process in which liquid asphalt is laid on a road surface and ¼” stone spread and rolled. This is not the same as conventional asphalt overlay. The cost is approximately 10 percent of conventional asphalt and is meant to provide a wearing surface on roads that will extend the life of a roadway.
The Public Works staff selected the roads based on the results of a recently completed Pavement Evaluation Survey conducted by an independent outside consultant. Roads selected for this type of application were in the marginal category and had just begun experiencing cracking.
Please note that a skim coat of conventional asphalt will be applied to the worst section of these roads prior to the chip seal application. The following sections of roads are scheduled for this chip sealing program: Boulder Road from Coleman Road to the Town Line; Coleman Road from Wallingford Road to Half Moon Road; Country Club Road from Wiese Road to South Meriden Road; Diamond Hill Road from River Road to the Town Line; Jinny Hill Road from South Main Street to Coleman Road; Half Moon Road from Coleman Road to Cook Hill Road; Moss Farms Road from Waterbury Road to Jarvis Street; Wolf Hill Road from Blacks Road to Oak Ridge Drive.
